Who do you choose to be?
Summer holidays is almost here, and maybe you have already started yours. When we step out of our everyday stress it becomes easier to set aside more time for reflection. A relevant question we can all ask ourselves is: "Who am I choosing to be right now?"
I'm currently wrapping up a period of intensive coaching of a team and leaders in an organisation I have been working with for the past few months. Looking back, we have managed in a short time to turn a red- and pink-zone culture into more of a green-zone culture.
Culture change is a continuous process, but I find it fascinating that awareness of which zone you find yourself in, often is enough to take the first steps. When we see examples of behaviour in the different zones and dare to name the elephant in the room, it is like the air goes out of the balloon, and we can start to have the real conversations. Simple steps, which for me are mostly about awareness and choice. Just as relevant in personal relationships as at work.
Who do you choose to be when you meet the people around you?
I believe conscious choices open doors, both to better relationships and to getting out of patterns that make us ineffective.
We all carry responsibility for how we show up, whether or not we thrive in the situation we are in.
When we reflect daily, it is easier to get hold of what is true in us, to let it express and reveal itself to us. I belive this becomes more and more important when we want to create change.
Recently I was challenged to change. I met one of my patterns, one I know well, but that I find hard to break.
I remember thinking, “I don’t want to change, it’s too much of a challenge.”
I reckon there are others besides me who have had that thought.
But once I finished that thought and felt the tension building inside me, I knew there was only one path that was right and true for me, and that was to face the discomfort, to keep growing, and to change. A little at a time, with deliberate steps and conscious choices.
What change are you currently facing that requires you to make a conscious choice?
Reply to this email, I would love to hear from you.
Practice: Listen to the body
Working through inner tension means, for me, turning my attention inwards. Directing your attention into your body, and away from your head. Breathing into whatever feels like tension in your body.
Tension can settle anywhere in your body; perhaps you feel something in your head, your throat, your chest, or your stomach. Perhaps you feel heavy shoulders, a sore back, or aches in your hips or legs.
All you need to do is direct your attention into your body and stay with wherever you feel tension. Without changing anything, just stay there.
When tension receives your attention, it often dissolves or shifts. Follow it wherever it goes, and stay with it.
Repeat this until you have felt all the tension in your body.
You don’t need to understand, name or explain what you are feeling. Just give it space, without changing anything.
Try this the next time you feel some inner tension, it only takes a few minutes.
Tantra therapy every Friday
Much of the work we do in tantra therapy and in workshops centres on the same thing, being present with what is happening in the moment. Sometimes it is something we have not yet allowed ourselves to feel. Sometimes it is something we are holding back between us. In tantra therapy, we create a space where you can make room for whatever is there.
Tantra therapy for couples and individuals: I have a few Friday slots available at the Tantra Centre in Oslo in July and August. For couples who are ready to work on presence, connection and what is happening in their relationship, and for those of you who want to work on your own patterns and areas for personal development. We work through presence.
For me, tantra therapy is medicine for the soul. Getting started is the hardest part, but in my experience, those who take that first step find it is worth it and keep coming back.
